Australia Day Ambassador heads to Mt Surprise

There was no mountain but plenty of smiles when Marayke and Mum Marion headed to Mt Suprise, a 6 hour drive from Cairns. Marayke spoke at the community Australia Day ceremony, and assisted with presenting the Australia Day Awards. She was suprised to discover that the mt in the towns name stands for mining town, not mountain. Marayke and marion visited the Terrestrial exhibition in nearby Georgetown where they learnt about the regions rich mineral history, and Marayke even scored a ride in the mayors porche

This local brought along the mascot from the Brisbane Commonwealth Games- her favourite childhood toy- to show Marayke

Marayke was given a local gem stone by the owners of 'Gem Den' in Mt Suprise- a thoughtful gift!

 Golden Moment

The local Mayor owns a gold mine and showed Marayke a gold Nugget- she couldn't believe it was worth almost $20,000! Marayke weighed it on the 'gold' scales to calculate its value.

Undarra Lava Tubes

All the locals suggested Marayke should visit the historic Undarra Lava tubes while in the area- and they even had a chair lift for wheelchair access!
